Contest October 1, 2006

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters Fishing Contest Planned Sunday October 1st
There will be an unsanctioned fishing contest for all BLB Members from Noon to 4pm on Hammel Lake Sunday October 1st.

Everyone attending will toss in $10. At the 4pm weigh-in each member will weigh-in up to five fish. The top two bags will take 70%/30% respectively. This will not be a “team” event. Each member will be fishing as an individual. We need to know how many people will be participating in order to organize who will bring boats. Please arrive at the landing no later than 11:30am. There will be no pre-fishing allowed on Sunday the 1st.
If you plan on participating please call Jim on his cell 218-839-4297.

Following the contest we’ll hang out for a impromptu picnic at Craigs. Please bring your own drinks (because this is a non-sanctioned tournament refreshments will also be allowed in the boats on this day), and bring your own “tube steak” (hot dog/brat/polish sausage) to toss on the grill. Craig will provide the buns, condiments and chips. We would ask that everyone throws in a couple bucks to help Craig pay for those items.

Words from the President

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters fifth year is now in the books. And it was another good year. A quick check of the year end standings shows there were many limits brought to the scales.
This was the case in our final tournament on North Long. It was a very windy day. There was a bit of a chill in the air. Trolling motor batteries took a beating. Still, each boat managed to put a limit of largemouth bass in the livewell.
Taking home first place trophies was the team of Scott and Justin. They mainly fished a main lake point. Scott also boated the big bass for the day. Congratulations to Scott and Justin!
Coming in second were Tom and Larry. They pretty much fished all over the main lake, with most of their fish also coming off a point. Good job guys.
Keith successfully defended his Angler of the Year title. That is no easy feat. There is no doubting the good year he had--with three wins. Way to go, Keith.
Some more congrats are in order. Chad finished fourth in the state alternate's tournament on Lake Alexander. This meant he was able to advance on to the State Bass Tournament of Champions. Congratulations to Chad. Our state team of Keith, Jim, Kim, and Troy had a good state tournament on Gull. The team represented us well, and we should be proud of them. So congratulations to them.
There will be some upcoming events. October 1 will be a mini-tournament on Hammel Lake. Our year end party is scheduled for October 8, 2:00 PM, at Chad and Mandee's. Bring a dish to pass and your own beer. Year end awards will be presented. Finally, I am looking at calling a meeting of the club for the final Sunday in October. We will need to get our initial state roster together at that time, plus elect officers for the new year.
I would like to thank Kim for all the work she has done in putting together our newsletters for the year and for keeping track of the standings. Thank you to Jim for serving as our tournament director. The digital scale was a great addition. And thanks to Scott for managing our finances. These three put in a lot of work this year.
Again, it was a great year. I am already looking forward to year six.
Dan

Words from the President

Another couple of tournaments have come and gone.
Our blind tournament was held on Mission Lake. This was an interesting day to say the least. Keith's motor overheated. Kim's boat almost sank. The wind howled. Other than that, it was a pretty good day for all involved. All the boats brought a limit of bass to the scales.
Jim and Troy took home first place trophies with their 13lb 7.5oz bag (And they were nice trophies.) Jim also took big bass for the day with a 3lb 10oz largemouth. They caught their limit in the reeds and along the deep weedlines off the reeds. Congratulations Jim and Troy.
Coming home in second place with 10lbs 14oz were Tom and Mike. Tom earned his first trophy as a member of our club. Tom and Mike fished reeds, slop, and just about everything else. Good job, guys.
One week later, we found ourselves on the Whitefish chain. I believe this was the first tournament for which we needed the rain gear. It was a pretty wet day. That did not hamper the fishing, though, as many limits were brought to the scales.
Keith and Craig brought in the heaviest bag, weighing 15lb 9oz and took first place honors. For those who are counting, this is Keith's third win of the year. Keith and Craig fished mostly in Upper Whitefish, but did take a side trip into Arrowhead. Nice job, Keith and Craig.
Second place went to Scott and Wade with 12lb 3oz. Wade also took big bass with a beautiful 4lb 13oz smallmouth. Scott and Wade fished weedlines in Lower Hay. Congratulations Scott and Wade.
Our final tournament will be Saturday, September 9, at North Long. Note the time change for this event. We will begin at 8:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM.
The State BASS tournament is coming up September 7 and 8. It will be on Gull Lake, with weigh-ins beginning at 3:00 PM each day. Weigh-in site is Ernie's. Good luck to Keith, Jim, Kim, Troy, and Dan. They will be representing the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters in this year's State Tournament. Good luck, also, to Chad. He will be fishing the alternate's tournament. With a good showing, he, too, will move on to state.
Our year end party has been tentatively scheduled for October 8. Chad and Mandee will host us. Details will be forthcoming. As the season winds down, we need to begin looking to next year. There will be a club meeting the end of October or beginning of November. We will need to put together our initial state roster, elect officers for the coming year, and determine who will be attending the state federation meetings for the next year. (I will plan on attending the first one in October.)
It has been a good year. Remember that we are a club. See you all at North Long.

Dan

July 2006

It was a great day on Pelican. The temperatures were warm, and the wind was not too bad. Everybody had a good day, even though some of us had a difficult time getting on a big fish bite.

Not so for our first place team, though. Keith and Kim took top honors for the day with a bag of largemouth weighing 15 pounds 3.5 ounces. Their limit also included the big bass of the day for Keith weighing 4 pounds 7.5 ounces. It seems they fished a main lake rock hump. Congratulations to Keith and Kim. Good job.

Second place trophies were awarded to Larry and Wade. Their fish were caught in and around deep reeds. Way to go Larry and Wade.

Our next tournament is Saturday, August 5. This will be our blind tournament. We will meet in the Baxter Fleet Farm parking lot at 6:00 AM. Then we will draw the name of the lake from a hat, and we will caravan to the access. For a list of the potential blind lakes, check our website--Brainerdbassmasters.com. Pre-fishing the potential blind lakes is permitted. If you are unable to fish, please contact Jim by the Wednesday before the tournament 218-839-4297.

Some more congratulations are in order. Congratulations to Keith and Rachel on the birth of their daughter. Breanne Marie came into the world weighing six pounds. She is a keeper. Congratulations, also, to Mike Dieter. Mike graduated from CLC with a degree in criminal justice. Good luck Mike.

Have a good rest of July. And we will see you all August 5.

Words from the President

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters' first tournament of the year on Lake Edward was great. The weather cooperated, and the wind was fairly quiet. The fish were biting, too. All boats had a limit of bass in the livewell. Most of the fish brought to the scales were smallmouth bass. The smallies were caught in the reeds in shallow water. More than one boat was on this pattern. And our new digital scale weighed the fish very nicely.

Keith Tuma is out to prove that last year's Angler of the Year Title was no fluke. Keith teamed with Troy Bruns to take first place honors. Their bag consisted of five smallmouths. Keith also earned the big bass award. Congratulations to Keith and Troy.

The second place trophy went to Rod Romine and Nick Koschmeder. They, too, brought in a limit of smallmouth bass. Good job Rod and Nick.

The Good Samaritan Award goes to Greg Kangas and Justin Goss. The happened upon a guy whose boat had lost all power. Greg and Justin took time out of their fishing to tow the man to shore. Way to go Greg and Justin! Acts like this make the club look good.

So we are off and running. It will be a good year. Our next tournament is July 9, at Pelican Lake. Blast off is at 7:00 AM. If you cannot make it, please let Jim Eide know by the Wednesday before the tournament. See you all at Pelican.

Dan

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters Tournament Rules

Rules:
This club has adopted the tournament rules of the Bassmaster Federation.

Some important highlights of these rules are as follows:

Participation: Tournaments are open to persons who are 16 years of age or older and a member of the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters.

Pre-fishing: Our club has determined pre-fishing times to be up to sun down the Wednesday before the tournament. So Thursday thru tournament day is off limits.

Safety: During the tournament each competitor is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved chest type life preserver. This preserver must be worn anytime the combustion engine is operating. This preserver must be worn until you’ve reached your fishing destination and the motor has been shut off. Violation of this rule shall be reason for disqualification.

Sportsmanship: Competitors are expected to follow high standards of sportsmanship, courtesy, safety and conservation. Use of alcohol or drugs by any competitor during the tournament will not be allowed.

Tackle and Equipment: Only artificial lures may be used. No Live bait or prepared bait will be permitted with the exception of pork strips, rinds etc. Nets are allowed.

Basic Boat Equipment: Every boat must have all required Coast Guard safety equipment. In addition it must have a functional bilge pump and live well space, properly aerated, to adequately maintain alive a limit catch of bass.

Penalty points: For each legal dead bass presented to weigh-in officials, the competitor shall be penalized 4 ounces of weight, to be deducted form his daily score.

Late Penalty: Competitors who are not in by the appointed time shall be penalized at the rate of 1 pound per minute. Any competitor more than 15 minutes late will lose all their weight for that day.

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters point system:

1st place 30
2nd place 25
3rd place 24
4th place 23
5th place 22
6th place 21
7th place 20
8th place 19
9th place 18
10th place 17

Any ties will be broken first by the number of fish and second by the biggest fish.

2005 Additions/Changes to the Rules:
1. Anglers (boaters) will be competing against each other and the Co-anglers (non-boaters) will be competing against each other for year end trophies. The team concept will remain the same and the same points will be awarded to both team members at each tournament. But they will then be divided by category (angler and co-angler). Then at year end 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to each category. One Big Bass trophy will still be awarded for the biggest bass regardless of who caught it. (revised see 2006)

2. Anyone that doesn’t show up for a tournament and hasn’t called the tournament director beforehand will be imposed a ten point penalty from their total points after their throw-out.

3. If a boater doesn’t show up at a tournament and the non-boater is forced to leave, the non-boater will be awarded 24 points instead of the previous “lowest amount of points after all participants are awarded”.

2006 Additions/Changes to the Rules:

1. There is always a five fish limit for all teams at all BLB tournaments even if all boats are filled with two partners.

2. Amend rule #1 under 2005 additions/changes to read: Anglers (boaters) and Co-anglers (non-boaters) will be competing directly against each other for year end trophies. The team concept will remain the same and the same points will be awarded to both team members at each tournament. There will be NO category (angler and co-angler) division. At year end there will be five trophies awarded and one big bass.

April 2, 2006 Membership Meeting Minutes

BRAINERD LAKES BASSMASTERS
April 2, 2006, MEETING MINUTES

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters met Sunday, April 2, 2006, at The Old Waterfall. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM, by President Dan Doughty.

Present were: Kim Borden, Keith Tuma, Jim Eide, Dan Doughty, Wade Hollingsworth, Chad Ingvalson, Greg Kangas, Craig Paulson, Rod Romine, Mike Dieter, Tom Conway, Reid Seevers and Justin Goss

Welcome new members: Tom Conway, Justin Goss, Rick Nustvold and Larry Hauglie.

The minutes from the February 26, 2006 minutes were approved as written.

In the absence of the treasurer, Scott Roesner, the treasurers report was read by Greg Kangas. We have a balance of $875. Gregt collected the $20 membership fees for anyone attending that hadn’t paid at a previous meeting and all tournament fees with the exception of Troy Bruns whom was not present. Greg also collected Federation dues from Rod, Tom and Justin.

Keith and Rod reported on the March Federation meeting in Medina. They were late for the meeting and were counted as not present but Dan emailed the state Federation president and got us marked as present.

The final Federation meeting was suppose to be attended by Troy Bruns but Troy has indicated that will not be able to attend the April 15 Federation meeting. At this meeting there will be a vote for 2007 TOC location. The vote will be for either Horseshoe Chain, Leech Lake or Mississippi River Pools 4 and 5.

We signed up three more Federation members (Rod, Justin and Tom) in an effort to insure a full team at state this year. We were hoping to sign a total of four.

Dan went over the membership levels and fees again:

Local BLB Club: $20 annually, entitles you to be a member of the Brainerd Lakes Bassmaster’s, including voting rights. Mandatory for anyone fishing BLB tournaments.

B.A.S.S. $14 annually (optional for club members, mandatory for Federation members). Members receive the monthly magazine Bassmaster.

State Federation: $50 annually (optional for club members, mandatory for anglers participating in the State Federation (TOC) Tournament of Champions). This would entitle you to receive the Bass n Times tabloid. Everyone qualifying and intending to fish the 2007 TOC must pay their 2006 State Federation dues now.

ESPN BASS: $20 annually. Mandatory for Federation members. These dues are paid by BLB’s general fund. This is our insurance dues for our club events.
Tournament Fees: $50 annually. This is mandatory for all club members. It’s a $10 per tournament fee to help cover the costs of trophies and plaques.

Jim Eide made a motion to change the rules back to the previous rules that we don’t segregate the boaters and the non-boaters in our points system and that we go back to having one set of year end trophies (1st – 5th and Big Bass).

Reversing this rule imposed in 2005: 1.

The new rule would read: Anglers (boaters) and Co-anglers (non-boaters) will be competing directly against each other for year end trophies. The team concept will remain the same and the same points will be awarded to both team members at each tournament. There will be NO category (angler and co-angler) division. At year end there will be five trophies awarded and one big bass.

Keith Tuma seconded it. Motion passed.

February 2006 Membership Meeting Minutes

BRAINERD LAKES BASSMASTERS
February 26, 2006, MEETING MINUTES

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters met Sunday, February 26, 2005, at The Old Waterfall. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM, by President Dan Doughty.

Present were: Kim Borden, Keith Tuma, Jim Eide, Dan Doughty, Wade Hollingsworth, Chad Ingualson, Scott Roesner, Greg Kangas, Craig Paulson, Rod Romine and Mike Dieter

The minutes from the January 15, 2006 minutes were approved as written.

The treasurers report was read. We have a balance of $829. Scott collected the $20 membership fees for everyone attending that hadn’t paid at the previous meeting.

Old Business: We had to switch around the August 5th and the August 13th tournaments due to permit conflicts. (5th will now be the blind and the 13th WF).

Jim reported on the January Federation meeting in Medina.

Keith Tuma will attend the March 4 Federation meeting.
Troy Bruns will attend the April 15 Federation meeting.

We are still looking for four more Federation members to insure a full team at state this year. Rod said he would join bringing that number down to 3.

Currently we have 8 boaters and 4 non boaters. We tabled the partner draw until our April meeting, leaving the membership open until then. Our bylaws allow for a total of 20 members.

Rod’s wife has donated some nice Bass Pro weigh in bags with the handles.

The next meeting was set for Sunday April 2nd at 2pm at the Old Waterfall. We will collect tournament dues of $50 per person and Federation dues of $50 per person so interested in joining the Federation (you have to join this year in order to fish the TOC next year).

Meeting adjourned at 2:30pm.
Respectfully Submitted,

Kim Borden, Secretary

Saturday Aug 5th Blind
Sunday August 13th Whitefish
Saturday September 9th North Long

January 15, 2006 Membership Meeting Minutes

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters met Sunday, January 15, 2005, at The Old Waterfall. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM, by President Dan Doughty.

Present were: Kim Borden, Keith Tuma, Jim Eide, Dan Doughty, Wade Hollingsworth, Chad Ingualson, Scott Roesner, Greg Kangas and Arnie Farber.

The minutes from the October 30, 2005 minutes were approved as written.

The treasurers report was read. We have a balance of $729.18 before membership dues are collected. Scott collected the $20 membership fees for everyone attending.

Kim reported on the December Federation meeting in Medina. There is much discussion on the National Federation dues increase from $15 to $20 per year. Another issue discussed was the need for all tournaments to have a Sheriff’s permit and we need to get our lakes and dates to the Minnesota Federation as soon as possible.

Jim Eide and Chad Ingualson will attend the January 21st Federation meeting.
Keith Tuma will attend the March 4 Federation meeting.
Troy Bruns will attend the April 15 Federation meeting.

Dan explained the importance of securing enough Federation members in order to send a full team to State this year.

Jim made a motion to have the club treasury pay the additional $5 of the newly imposed National Federation dues per member. We’ve always paid the $15 per member because this is our tournament insurance for the entire club. Keith seconded it. Passed.

Chad made a motion that we have one blind tournament this summer. We would meet at Fleet Farm an hour before the tournament is scheduled to start and then draw a lake then and there. Scott seconded it. Passed.

Keith made a motion that all tournaments, regardless if there are two people in each boat, only have a five fish limit. Wade seconded it. Passed.

Scott brought some information from Outkast Tackle company. You can see their products at www.outkasttackle.com. They sell stick baits by the 100 for $20 or they may discount it to $17 per 100 if you were to order 6 or so 100 count bags.

We decided on dates and lakes:
Saturday June 3rd Edward
Sunday July 9th Pelican
Saturday Aug 5th Whitefish Chain
Sunday August 13th Blind
Saturday September 9th North Long
This year’s alternate lake is Gull/Crow Wing River

The Blind tournament will be drawn from the following lakes:
Borden
Serpent
Mission
Upper South Long
Clearwater
Bay
Lower/Middle Cullin

The next meeting was set for Sunday February 26th at 2pm at the Old Waterfall. We will continue to collect membership dues of $20 per person and Federation dues of $50 per person so interested in joining the Federation (you have to join this year in order to fish the TOC next year).

Meeting adjourned at 3:00pm.
