BRAINERD LAKES BASSMASTERS
October 30, 2005, MEETING MINUTES

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters met Sunday, October 30, 2005, at The Old Waterfall. The meeting was called to order at 1:15 PM, by President Dan Doughty.

Present were: Kim Borden, Craig Paulson, Greg Kangas, Chad Ingvalson Keith Tuma, Jim Eide and Dan Doughty.

There was no treasurer’s report as the treasurer didn’t show.

Dan Doughty represented our club at the October Minnesota State Federation meeting. He reported on that meeting. He specified that we are required to acquire Sheriff’s permits for each tournament.

We need people to attend future State Federation meetings:

Saturday December 3, 2005 – Kim Borden
Saturday January 21, 2006 – Jim Eide
Saturday March 4, 2006
Saturday April 15, 2006

Keith Tuma and Troy Bruns each need to choose either the March or April meeting to attend.

We collected State Federation membership of $50.00 per person interested in joining. The club will pay the $15.00 ESPN fees of each person that pays their $50.00 State Federation membership. You must pay your State Federation membership dues the year prior to the year you are qualified to fish the State Tournament of Champions. (example: you have to be a Federation member in the summer of 2006 and qualify to fish the TOC in 2007 in order to be allowed to fish it). You have until May 1st 2006 to pay your 2006 membership dues of $50.00.

Dan explained State Federation membership. The number of anglers from our club who can participate in the state tournament of champions (TOC) will be determined by the number of members we have in the State Federation. The more members we have on our state roster, then the more who can fish the TOC. Dan explained it would be nice if our club could send a full team to state—at least four anglers plus an alternate. To do this, we would need to shoot for fifteen State Federation members. We have until May 1st to add new members.

Officers were nominated as follows:
President: Dan Doughty
Treasurer: Scott Roesner
Secretary: Kim Borden
Tournament Director: Jim Eide

Craig made a motion to cast a white ballot vote because there was only one nomination for each position. Jim seconded it. Motion carried. These position officially begin January 1, 2006.

We need to submit an accurate accounting of our lakes and dates this year. So we will try to accomplish this at our next meeting.

Other business for the agenda of our next meeting will include: Blind tournament and limiting our bags to five fish for every tournament.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday January 8, 2006 at 2pm at the Old Waterfall, Highway 371, Brainerd.

Meeting adjourned at 2:08pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Kim Borden, Secretary

Meeting Notice:
General Club Membership meeting: Sunday October 30, 2005 1pm at the Old Waterfall, Hwy 371 Brainerd.

Words from the President: It would seem our year ended the same way it began. You may recall that our first tournament of the year on Farm Island had some rather heavy rain for most of the morning. And Keith Tuma won that tournament with about eighteen pounds of fish.
Well...our final tournament on Cedar had some rain for most of the day. And Keith teamed with Craig Paulson to take first place honors. Their limit of eight fish weighed eighteen pounds. Congratulations to Keith and Craig. Keith also took big bass honors with a four pound lunker. I believe that was his fourth big fish of the year. It was a good year for Mr. Tuma.
Congratulations, also, to Arnie Farber and Kim Borden. They managed a second place showing. Great job!
Needless to say, with three wins on the season, Keith won the Angler of the year title. Second place in the angler division goes to Jim Eide. In the co-angler division, Troy Bruns finished in first place, with Kim taking the second spot. Keith, Jim, Troy, and Kim will comprise our state team for next year. Dan Doughty will be the alternate. Of course, we can send more to the state tournament, depending on the number of anglers we sign up for the state federation. Next year's state tournament is on Gull, so we might want to attempt to send as many anglers as possible.
All in all, it was a good and fun year, and we are looking forward to next season. We will have a club meeting October 30, 2:00 PM, at the Waterfall. A final club get together will be October 16 at Keith's place. It should be a fun time.
Have a great winter, and we will see you all next fishing season.
Dan

Saturday December 3, 2005

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters 2005 State Team

The 2005 Minnesota State Tournament is now just a memory. The event was held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday September 7th, 8th and 9th in Alexandria on the Le Homme Dieu chain of lakes.

The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters had done considerable planning so they could send a whole team this year. And they actually did have enough Federation membership to accomplish that but just days after the official cutoff Wade Hollingsworth backed out. It was unfortunate that he didn't know just a few days earlier.

That being said the club was only allowed to use the remaining three anglers that were already signed up to form their team. Their alternate, Rod Romine, was there to try to qualify on Wednesday to fish the main event on Thursday and Friday. He qualified just one outside the cutoff but as good luck would have it an angler finishing above Rod had some penalties which put his weight below Rods. This put Rod on the water two more days to complete against 183 other anglers for the State title. It did not however put him on the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters team.

Some info you may find interesting:
*184 Anglers
*Range Bassmasters won the team competition. BLB members finished as follows: Jim Eide 43rd, Rod Romine 106th, Dan Doughty 164th and Troy Bruns 169th.

August 2005 Newsletter

Words from the President:
Our fourth tournament on the Mississippi River was a good one. The day started out a bit foggy. This made running up the River a bit tricky. But all anglers made it up and back safely, and all the boats came back in one piece. Several four pound bass came to the scales, along with a couple of five pounders. Early predictions were it might take nineteen pounds to win. That proved to be true.
Jim and Kim took home first place trophies. They weighed in over eighteen pounds. Seems they were culling three pound fish. Congratulations to Jim and Kim on their victory.
Craig showed up, and he teamed with Wade to capture second place honors. Their limit weighed over seventeen pounds. Craig also took big bass honors with a lunker weighing five pounds and 2 ounces. He edged out Arnie by a mere half ounce for big fish. Kudos to Wade and Craig.
Our final tournament will be Saturday, September 24, on Cedar Lake. We will be launching from the only public access on the lake. Note the change in times for this event. We will begin at 8:00 AM and end at 4:00 PM.
We want to wish Jim, Dan, Wade, and Troy luck as they fish this year's state tournament on the le Homme Dieu chain of lakes in Alexandria, September 8 and 9. Rod will be competing in the alternates tournament the day before. With a good showing, he could move on to the state tournament. So good luck to Rod.
Have a good rest of the summer. We will see everybody at Cedar.

Dan

Lakes Area “Clash” Tournament
When: Sunday September 18, 2005
Where: Don’t know yet…Baxter picks the lake and hasn’t notified us yet as to the location.
What: The three area Bassmaster clubs meet each fall in a tournament to compete against each other. Each contestant is paired in a boat with an angler from one of the other two clubs. You are fishing for your own weight. The person you are fishing with is fishing against you. Your total weight (five fish) will be considered for your individual weight and will be added to your club weight total as well.
Who: Each club sends 6 people to the Clash (three boaters and three non boaters). Our club pays the $10 entry fee for those 6 individuals. Anyone else that would like to participate can pay their own entry fee of $10 and fish it. There will be a big bass pot also which is $5 per person. Every contestant is responsible to pay this fee themselves. The club will not be picking up any big bass entry fees.

We qualify people by their current club standings, including their throw out, at the time of the Clash. People in the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters that qualified to fish the Clash are: Boaters….Keith Tuma, Jim Eide and Dan Doughty. Dan cannot fish it, so next in line is Terry Carper. If Terry is unable to fish it then it would be Greg and so on and so forth.
Non-boaters: Troy Bruns, Chad Ingvalson and Reid Seevers.

If you’ve qualified and will not be fishing the Clash you need to notify Arnie ASAP, so he can contact the next person that qualified.

If you did not qualify and are still planning on fishing the Clash you need to call Arnie ASAP so you’re name will go into the partner draw.

Attention non-boaters:
Keep in mind the cost of running a boat. Please help out your boater partner by chipping in on the gas money.

Dan Doughty & Mike Dieter accept their 2nd place plaques with 23 lbs 11 ounces for the July 9th & 10th tournament.

July Newsletter Volume #1

Words from the President:
One word would describe the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters two-day tournament on the Gull Lake chain: Hot.
It was hot, with temperatures soaring into the 90's. I'm sure everyone consumed copious amounts of water, Gatorade, and Powerade. The warm weather also meant there were plenty of pleasure boaters, water-skiers, and jet skies on the water. Fishing for most everyone slowed down about the middle of the day.
Hot would also describe Keith Tuma. Keith and Troy Bruns took first place with a two-day total of over 29 pounds. Their second day's catch of 18 pounds was awesome! That bag included four and three pound fish. Congratulations Keith and Troy. This marks Keith's second win in as many tournaments. He certainly has a leg up on angler-of-the-year. Keith has also weighed in the big bass on each of our three tournament days. So I guess he is hot.
Mike Dieter and I managed 23 pounds, good enough for second place. Congratulations Mike. Both the first and second place bags came out of Lake Margaret, at opposite ends of the lake.
Our next tournament is Saturday, July 16, on Rabbit Lake. We will be launching from the only public access on the lake. It looks like it will again be hot, so bring and drink plenty of fluids.
I would like to say thank you to some people.
Thank you to Kim for the work she has done on our website, and for making sure we all receive the necessary news and information. Thank you to Arnie for staying on top of the boat pairings and for handling our weigh-in's. Thank you to Scott for taking care of jacket, shirt, and hat orders. Thank you to Keith and Chad for purchasing shirts for our state team.
Thank you to Jim and Marci for having us over to their place for a cookout after day one of our Gull tournament. Jim and Keith ran the grills. Marci made some great pickle wraps and other goodies. All who came brought some good food. It was a great time.
And thanks to all for being a part of the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters. It has been a good year so far. I trust it will continue.
See you at Rabbit.

June 2005 Newsletter

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters
June 2005

Words from the President: The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters' 2005 season got off to a great start on Farm Island Lake. Other than a couple of downpours, the weather cooperated. And so did the fish. Just about every team weighed in a limit of five largemouth bass. In fact, just one team failed to boat a limit. Okay, it was my team. Still, the fishing was fun. Congratulations to Keith and Reid. Their five fish weighed over seventeen pounds. Not only did they win, but it would seem they lapped the field. They are off to a good start. Good job, guys. Congratulations, also, to Jim on his second place finish; and to Arnie and Eric for their third place showing. Our next event is our two day tournament, July 9 and 10, on Gull Lake. Remember to contact the tournament director by the Wednesday preceding the tournament if you are unable to fish. Failure to do so will result in a significant penalty in points. Kim has been working on our new website. Check it out at brainerdbassmasters.com. If you have any suggestions for the site, talk to any member of the executive committee (Kim, Scott, Arnie, or Dan). This promises to be a good year. Happy fishing, and see you at Gull Lake in July. Dan

Attention non-boaters:

Keep in mind the cost of running a boat. Please help out your boater partner by chipping in on the gas money! A full discussion should be held between the two partners prior to departing on the morning of the tournament regarding the operation of the boat and the shared costs of gas and oil for that day.

Newsletter announcement:
From this point forward if you have an email address you will be receiving your newsletter via email. This is in effort o reduce the costs of printing and postage. Currently I have only three members that have not furnished me with an email address and they will continue to receive the newsletter via the mail until at which time they obtain an email address. Those people are: Troy Bruns, Terry Carper and Reid Seevers.

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters Tournament Rules

This club has adopted the tournament rules of the Bassmaster Federation.

Some important highlights of these rules are as follows:

Participation: Tournaments are open to persons who are 16 years of age or older and a member of the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters.

Pre-fishing: Our club has determined pre-fishing times to be up to sun down the night before the tournament.

Safety: During the tournament each competitor is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved chest type life preserver. This preserver must be worn anytime the combustion engine is operating. This preserver must be worn until you’ve reached your fishing destination and the motor has been shut off. Violation of this rule shall be reason for disqualification.

Sportsmanship: Competitors are expected to follow high standards of sportsmanship, courtesy, safety and conservation. Use of alcohol or drugs by any competitor during the tournament will not be allowed.

Tackle and Equipment: Only artificial lures may be used. No Live bait or prepared bait will be permitted with the exception of pork strips, rinds etc. Nets are allowed.

Basic Boat Equipment: Every boat must have all required Coast Guard safety equipment. In addition it must have a functional bilge pump and live well space, properly aerated, to adequately maintain alive a limit catch of bass.

Penalty points: For each legal dead bass presented to weigh-in officials, the competitor shall be penalized 4 ounces of weight, to be deducted form his daily score.

Late Penalty: Competitors who are not in by the appointed time shall be penalized at the rate of 1 pound per minute. Any competitor more than 15 minutes late will lose all their weight for that day.

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters point system:

1st place 30
2nd place 25
3rd place 24
4th place 23
5th place 22
6th place 21
7th place 20
8th place 19
9th place 18
10th place 17

Any ties will be broken first by the number of fish and second by the biggest fish.

New 2005 Additions/Changes to the Rules:

1. Anglers (boaters) will be competing against each other and the Co-anglers (non-boaters) will be competing against each other for year end trophies. The team concept will remain the same and the same points will be awarded to both team members at each tournament. But they will then be divided by category (angler and co-angler). Then at year end 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to each category. One Big Bass trophy will still be awarded for the biggest bass regardless of who caught it.

2. Anyone that doesn’t show up for a tournament and hasn’t called the tournament director beforehand will be imposed a ten point penalty from their total points after their throw-out.

3. If a boater doesn’t show up at a tournament and the non-boater is forced to leave, the non-boater will be awarded 24 points instead of the previous “lowest amount of points after all participants are awarded”.
