June 2005 Newsletter

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters
June 2005

Words from the President: The Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters' 2005 season got off to a great start on Farm Island Lake. Other than a couple of downpours, the weather cooperated. And so did the fish. Just about every team weighed in a limit of five largemouth bass. In fact, just one team failed to boat a limit. Okay, it was my team. Still, the fishing was fun. Congratulations to Keith and Reid. Their five fish weighed over seventeen pounds. Not only did they win, but it would seem they lapped the field. They are off to a good start. Good job, guys. Congratulations, also, to Jim on his second place finish; and to Arnie and Eric for their third place showing. Our next event is our two day tournament, July 9 and 10, on Gull Lake. Remember to contact the tournament director by the Wednesday preceding the tournament if you are unable to fish. Failure to do so will result in a significant penalty in points. Kim has been working on our new website. Check it out at brainerdbassmasters.com. If you have any suggestions for the site, talk to any member of the executive committee (Kim, Scott, Arnie, or Dan). This promises to be a good year. Happy fishing, and see you at Gull Lake in July. Dan

Attention non-boaters:

Keep in mind the cost of running a boat. Please help out your boater partner by chipping in on the gas money! A full discussion should be held between the two partners prior to departing on the morning of the tournament regarding the operation of the boat and the shared costs of gas and oil for that day.

Newsletter announcement:
From this point forward if you have an email address you will be receiving your newsletter via email. This is in effort o reduce the costs of printing and postage. Currently I have only three members that have not furnished me with an email address and they will continue to receive the newsletter via the mail until at which time they obtain an email address. Those people are: Troy Bruns, Terry Carper and Reid Seevers.

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters Tournament Rules

This club has adopted the tournament rules of the Bassmaster Federation.

Some important highlights of these rules are as follows:

Participation: Tournaments are open to persons who are 16 years of age or older and a member of the Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters.

Pre-fishing: Our club has determined pre-fishing times to be up to sun down the night before the tournament.

Safety: During the tournament each competitor is required to wear a Coast Guard-approved chest type life preserver. This preserver must be worn anytime the combustion engine is operating. This preserver must be worn until you’ve reached your fishing destination and the motor has been shut off. Violation of this rule shall be reason for disqualification.

Sportsmanship: Competitors are expected to follow high standards of sportsmanship, courtesy, safety and conservation. Use of alcohol or drugs by any competitor during the tournament will not be allowed.

Tackle and Equipment: Only artificial lures may be used. No Live bait or prepared bait will be permitted with the exception of pork strips, rinds etc. Nets are allowed.

Basic Boat Equipment: Every boat must have all required Coast Guard safety equipment. In addition it must have a functional bilge pump and live well space, properly aerated, to adequately maintain alive a limit catch of bass.

Penalty points: For each legal dead bass presented to weigh-in officials, the competitor shall be penalized 4 ounces of weight, to be deducted form his daily score.

Late Penalty: Competitors who are not in by the appointed time shall be penalized at the rate of 1 pound per minute. Any competitor more than 15 minutes late will lose all their weight for that day.

Brainerd Lakes Bassmasters point system:

1st place 30
2nd place 25
3rd place 24
4th place 23
5th place 22
6th place 21
7th place 20
8th place 19
9th place 18
10th place 17

Any ties will be broken first by the number of fish and second by the biggest fish.

New 2005 Additions/Changes to the Rules:

1. Anglers (boaters) will be competing against each other and the Co-anglers (non-boaters) will be competing against each other for year end trophies. The team concept will remain the same and the same points will be awarded to both team members at each tournament. But they will then be divided by category (angler and co-angler). Then at year end 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to each category. One Big Bass trophy will still be awarded for the biggest bass regardless of who caught it.

2. Anyone that doesn’t show up for a tournament and hasn’t called the tournament director beforehand will be imposed a ten point penalty from their total points after their throw-out.

3. If a boater doesn’t show up at a tournament and the non-boater is forced to leave, the non-boater will be awarded 24 points instead of the previous “lowest amount of points after all participants are awarded”.
